PRESS:
“The Danish musician’s experimental folk instrumentals blend cyclical guitar and droning harmonium into hypnotic reimaginings of Americana style graced by the life experience of a post-rock fan who cut his teeth in punk bands” - TINY MIX TAPES

“The music penetrates each living cell and every atom, evading all analysis and tests…it feels so very raw and special” - HEADPHONE COMMUTE

9/10 STARS “I’m not sure if Schelbeck has seen No Country For Old Men, but I’m pretty sure if you hooked this album up and let it play underneath, it’d sync up Floyd/ Wizard of Oz style.” - DROWNED IN SOUND

“Americana, British folk, European modern classical, ambient drone, and even echoes of post-rock and noise simmering beneath the surface. All of this is framed in a weathered, minimalist sensibility that makes Settlers satisfying much in the same way as a Hemingway or Steinbeck novel – not a word, or in this case a note, wasted.” - STATIONARY TRAVELS

“The music itself feels old, worn and somehow creased, the skin around its eyes wrinkled with the passage of the years…Don’t confuse old age for weakness, though, because the music speaks with a wise, experienced voice.” - FLUID RADIO

“The soft floating guitar feels perfectly at home with the turn of the century imagery used alongside. The music feels classic and timeless. This is definitely a record I’ll be tossing on after a shit day at the office, could sooth any weary soul.” - SLY VINYL

“There’s an elegance and refinement to Schelbeck’s playing that aligns him naturally to the British folk tradition…and yet, despite that, Settlers exudes an undeniably American aura” - TEXTURA

“A remarkable, sparse and hypnotic experience. Truly a beautiful work” - CYCLIC DEFROST

9/10 STARS - “Western Skies Motel is Danish guitar maestro René González Schelbeck who has managed to concoct one of those albums which from the very opening notes engulfs you band takes you to a place more peaceful than where you reside.” - NORMAN RECORDS

“It’s the sound of the hard-fought quiet night, the song on the front stoop, the roast in the oven and the pie on the sill… The message seems to be: life is hard, but we’ll get through it.” - A CLOSER LISTEN

“Album of the Week” - MUSIC WON’T SAVE YOU

Premiere: Western Skies Motel - “Whirl”

tinymixtapes:

Settling has gotten a bad rap lately. It has come to denote a kind of dispassion or regret. People settle on a dress or college to attend or color to paint their living room. They settle for less. Well, Western Skies Motel is taking it back.

With Settlers, due out April 22, 2016 on Lost Tribe Sound, René Gonzàlez Schelbeck created a sound for sore ears, for the older than old school, for the people who settled the across the great plains to the rocky, unforgiving wilderness and dramatic shoreline of the West, those who settled for more than they ever knew. The Danish musician’s experimental folk instrumentals blend cyclical guitar and droning harmonium into hypnotic reimaginings of Americana style graced by the life experience of a post-rock fan who cut his teeth in punk bands and the wide-eyed awe of an adventurous spirit who landed on the new continent centuries ago to carve a new life out of the unknown.

You can pre-order Settlers on CD or LP here. But, before then, check out the premiere of the video for “Whirl,” which sets the droning, fingerpicking instrumental to lightly manipulated vintage footage of trains and semi-arid landscapes that completes the sense of longing nostalgia heard in the tune. http://j.mp/1nYuVgK

Mute Forest - Everglade (from the Reforestation EP)

(Lost Tribe Sound)

Purchase or Stream the Reforestation EP:
Bandcamp: http://smarturl.it/reforestbc
Spotify: http://smarturl.it/reforestspotify

The ‘Reforestation EP’ presents a carefully selected group of musicians to remix songs from Mute Forest’s debut full-length 'Deforestation’ along with two new original songs from Mute Forest himself (“Glass of Sand Water and "Everglade”).  The 'Reforestation EP’ also came as a digital download card with physical editions of the 'Deforestation’ vinyl.  This collection was given a brilliant mastering by Kirk Marrison of Kiln (Ghostly International).

The 'Reforestation EP’ works as a solid accompaniment to the proper album, but also manages to stand on its own as a complete body of music.  The warm ambiance of Mute Forest’s original songs set the perfect backdrop to be reshaped into something equally as intimate and memorable.

Western Skies Motel - Whirl (from the upcoming album Settlers)

‘Settlers’ is the upcoming album from Western Skies Motel, out April 22nd, 2016 in a gatefold 180gram vinyl ( limited to 170 copies), cd and digital formats. 'Settlers’ was mastered for vinyl and digital by Taylor Deupree, lacquer cut by Roger Siebel at SAE, and physicals come with a bonus EP, 'Generations’ mastered by Kirk Marrison of Kiln.

In the dry desert of Arizona that Lost Tribe Sound calls home, a letter is received from guitarist René Gonzàlez Schelbeck who’s eager to share a collection of intimately composed songs, titled Settlers. Upon listening, we are immediately enthralled. There’s a timeworn, arid, and almost badlands quality to Schelbeck’s hypnotic, cyclical guitar style. It seems to perfectly capture the lonely, barren landscape of the American West.

Yet, there are curious dynamics at play here as Schelbeck, who makes music under the alias Western Skies Motel, is from Denmark and far removed from any upbringing in the rough-hewn Americana style of folk guitar. Conceivably, his music has more in common with the lonesome, calculated tone of Berlin’s modern classical scene or the rainy day folk of the UK. Those are intriguing parallels, since the collective mood of Western Skies Motel’s music would adapt so well to either environment.

William Ryan Fritch releases surprise Piano Day/ Birthday EP

Nils Frahm recently declared March 29th, “Piano Day” and in a strange coincidence, this exact day also happens to be William Ryan Fritch’s birthday. Feeling inspired by this, Fritch compiled five very special piano led pieces. These pieces are a nice precursor to his upcoming album ‘Music For Film Vol. I’

Settled Scores and Lost Tribe Sound present this stunning collection of film works from the prolific composer and multi-instrumentalist William Ryan Fritch. For the first time, Fritch’s most sought after film compositions are made available to the public. This volume will release to all subscribers of the Leave Me Sessions (11 album series) in March, and then to the rest of the world on April 21, 2015.

Music for Film Volume I features select works of composer/multi-instrumentalist William Ryan Fritch’s own fiercely self-sufficient, acoustic, and rustic brand of modern classical music from soundtracks, commissions, and multi-media works composed in 2014. Whether it be the humid thicket of cellos for “Skunk” (from the Cannes award winning short film “Skunk”) or the piercing drama and sincerity of “Processional” ( a piece Fritch wrote for his own wedding), this collection seamlessly integrates sounds culled from widely varied visual worlds into an immersive and hypnotic narrative of it’s own. There is a good chance you have heard his work before in a film, a television show, a commercial, or in a number of GoPro videos but with Settled Scores’ ongoing series you can hear the best of Fritch’s film music presented as satisfying and cohesive stand alone records.

Settled Scores is a small boutique licensing company, founded by composer William Ryan Fritch and visual artist/record label owner Ryan Keane (LTS), that specializes in artful, organic, and painstakingly crafted music. Drawing from a selective group of gifted contemporary composers, sound artists, producers and recording artists (e.g. Matthew Collings, Field Rotation, Aaron Martin, and Benoit Pioulard), Settled Scores not only offers gorgeous libraries of pre-existing works, but also serves as an integrative hub for commissioning custom works from dozens of unique artists, each with their own distinctive compositional voice.

Mute Forest - Infinity Pools EP (Out April 7th)

Mute Forest // Set to release a new EP on Lost Tribe Sound

What does the future of peace and quiet look like? Is it possible for someone to find serenity in a world where population mushrooms and buildings continuously jockey for the best possible view? With Kael Smith’s (Mombi, Khale) Mute Forest this dichotomy is at the epicenter of his Infinity Pools EP due April 7th via Lost Tribe Sound.

To coincide with visuals courtesy of Gregory Euclide (Bon Iver, Erased Tapes), Smith’s debut EP fuses acoustic sounds, mangled electronics and provocative lyrics across four meditative yet mesmerizing tracks. Mastered by Taylor Deupree . Fans of Moteer, Orcas, Part Timer, The Notwist, etc. take note!

“Fritch’s haunting vocals and thumping percussion…which evoke a sense of euphoric dread” - VICE

“Orchestral folk that rattles you to the core with its massive beauty” - FLAVORWIRE

“Fritch shapes "unruly” acoustic source material with a bevy of effects before putting the sounds to work as building blocks. Churning figures for string orchestra, rolling piano chords, and pealing electric guitar leads provide warm centers to sonic landscapes strewn with junkyard-snare hits and amplified pedal noise.“ - PITCHFORK

"It’s a conceptually overwhelming experience, but Fritch’s gentle vocals feel warm and reassuring.” - CONSEQUENCE OF SOUND

“Despite its subject matter, the album doesn’t come across as a United Nations summit. Instead, the music echoes with the weight of prophecy.” - A CLOSER LISTEN

“This is complex lyrical music. It’s bombastic without being overbearing, and there’s a vulnerability and innocence here that is nothing short of breathtaking. His ability to sew these contradictory elements together is the real key to this album. It really does feel like something definitive.” - CYCLIC DEFROST

“Revisionist is to a large degree a song-based album that naturally situates Fritch’s distinctive voice, an ear-catching instrument that undulates in tandem with the slow, dream-like flow of the music, at the forefront.” - TEXTURA

“This is the free-gan style of modern-baroque-classic that all DIY orchestral auteurs and musicians should take note of.” - IMPOSE MAGAZINE

“There’s an impossibly gripping aesthetic to this…, a feeling that goes far beyond your headphones, your building, even the city that you’re in.” - ART INFO

“A rich and soaring soundscape that envelops the listener in a beautiful ethereal haze” - THE BAY BRIDGED

Award winning filmmaker/editor Fiona Otway’s feature film The Sum Of Its Parts introduces some of the world’s foremost robot researchers alongside tomorrow’s future leaders in robotics. This film explores the messy front lines of the crusade to make robots part of our everyday experience. From initial sketches, to soldering wires, to programming actions and performing experiments “in the wild”, scientists, high school students, and artists obsessed with bringing robots to life are shaping a new era in our relationship with technology. Yet, by observing their successes and failures along the way, what becomes clear is that robots actually have a lot to teach us about what it means to be human. The Sum of Its Parts is a celebration of hands-on human creativity, and a contemplation of our deep need for connection and community as a source of meaning in our lives.

Its soundtrack, composed and performed by William Ryan Fritch, is a dynamic counterpart to the film’s central themes and philosophical inquiries. The score’s markedly organic instrumentation (string ensemble, french horn, vibraphone and prepared piano), is wrought into circuitous rhythms and patterns that hum, churn and grind with a mechanical steadiness that belies the achingly human and expressive compositions they propel.

Due to the sheer amount of incredible music composer/singer-songwriter William Ryan Fritch (aka Vieo Abiungo, Death Blues Ensemble) has amassed over the last couple years, a period of time we now call the “Leave Me Sessions,“ Lost Tribe Sound decided to present this body of work as a sub- scription package (Limited to 175 Subscriptions)

Fans of Mr. Fritch’s music who sign up for this series will be treated to an extraordinary collection of music, the finest work of his career, curated and presented free of fluff or filler. Subscribers will receive over 6 ½ hours of his inimitable compositions and songs spanning 3 full-length physical albums, 4 EPs, 2 soundtracks of which includes The Sum of Its Parts, and exclusive subscriber-only music and content! Plus, the first 50 subscribers only will receive an advanced postcard format download of William Ryan Fritch’s – Music for Film Vol. I. In total, the Leave Me Sessions Subscription Series encompasses 10 albums and some 110 plus songs, and is one of the most ambitious and satisfying projects LTS has ever brought to life.

You RemainWilliam Ryan Fritch

Empty, the latest EP from composer William Ryan Fritch, was released this week.  It is an album of deceptively simple songs that, with their raw and unrestrained conveyance, emanate persuasive warmth and candor. The stripped down and restrained arrangements of these tracks are brought into extreme focus, saturating each note, thud, and pause with an expansive depth of field. These intimate songs proudly show their bruises. They offer stability in their numerous creaks and rasps, find clarity in common disillusionment, and celebrate loving and morbid tangents in the same breath.  The beautiful cover art was provided by renowned Brazilian artist and illustrator João Ruas.

Press Reviews:

“Fritch’s prodigious output is evidence that he is pouring his heart into his work, and by extension, into a deeper philosophy.” - A Closer Listen

“Empty shows Fritch at his most heartfelt and, surprisingly, vocal.” - Exclaim!

“At first blush, the songs seem straightforward enough, but an undercurrent of dread and disillusionment can be gleaned beneath their surfaces, an impression sonically reinforced when so many of them are animated by plodding rhythms.” - Textura

Also “Tend” from the Empty EP was featured in this epic video from GoPro: Descent Into the Lava of Marum in 4K. Check it out at around the 9:50 minute mark HERE.

Perfect Midnight World gives us this excellent review of the new Graveyard Tapes album!  Thank you PMW!

perfectmidnightworld:

“Sometimes the Sun Doesn’t Want to Be Photographed” by Graveyard Tapes // White Rooms (Available Now via Lost Tribe Sound)

Here’s a wonderful case of accidental discovery. Graveyard Tapes are a duo hailing from Scotland that explore the darker sides of experimental pop. I happened upon their newest album, White Rooms, recently through Soundcloud, and was taken with their sound. In particular, their ghostly, minimalist track, “Sometimes the Sun Doesn’t Want to be Photographed” which is a pretty excellent representative for the kind of darkly alluring sounds that you’ll find on the full length. Throughout the haunting beauty, the duo play with tempo which is at once disorienting, but moreso hypnotic - which pulls you in further into the shadowy world that Graveyard Tapes build on each track. The duo’s experimental pop sound is confident, assured and at no time does it feel excessive - everything seems to be exactly in the place that it’s supposed to be, and that sort of confidence that makes the music so rewarding. It’s highly recommended for fans of Amnesiac-era Radiohead, Atlas Sound, and Neon Golden-era The Notwist.

William Ryan Fritch ~ Heavy / Empty EPs Reviewed by A Closer Listenacloserlisten.com

“It’s impossible not to react: we do so with indifference, with repellence, or with sympathy. Heavy causes us to feel; Empty challenges us to think. But what will we do with this internal churning?” (Richard Allen- A Closer Listen)

Lost Tribe Sound - Without Darkness

Lost Tribe Sound recently created a label mix, Without Darkness exclusively for Headphone Commute.  It is currently the #1 rated mix on Mixcloud in the genres of Indie, Experimental, Instrumental, and Ambient!  Have a listen, and spread the word if you will.

Label owner Ryan Keane wrote a whole bunch of words about the mix and strung them together into sentences… paragraphs even. Here is a small excerpt from that.

“It has been an honor to work with some amazing musicians and artists since LTS started in 2010 including our main roster consisting of William Ryan Fritch, Graveyard Tapes, Part Timer, Benoit Pioulard, and Cock & Swan. That said, this mix is more of a look to the future. Most of this material has yet to be released or songs that have been released quite recently. A new one from Graveyard Tapes upcoming album White Rooms and Fritch’s upcoming Empty EP make their debut here, along with a few exciting new editions to our roster: Mute Forest (aka Mombi), Skyphone, and Western Skies Motel.”
