Settling has gotten a bad rap lately. It has come to denote a kind of dispassion or regret. People settle on a dress or college to attend or color to paint their living room. They settle for less. Well, Western Skies Motel is taking it back.
With Settlers, due out April 22, 2016 on Lost Tribe Sound, René Gonzàlez Schelbeck created a sound for sore ears, for the older than old school, for the people who settled the across the great plains to the rocky, unforgiving wilderness and dramatic shoreline of the West, those who settled for more than they ever knew. The Danish musician’s experimental folk instrumentals blend cyclical guitar and droning harmonium into hypnotic reimaginings of Americana style graced by the life experience of a post-rock fan who cut his teeth in punk bands and the wide-eyed awe of an adventurous spirit who landed on the new continent centuries ago to carve a new life out of the unknown.

The ‘Reforestation EP’ presents a carefully selected group of musicians to remix songs from Mute Forest’s debut full-length 'Deforestation’ along with two new original songs from Mute Forest himself (“Glass of Sand Water and "Everglade”). The 'Reforestation EP’ also came as a digital download card with physical editions of the 'Deforestation’ vinyl. This collection was given a brilliant mastering by Kirk Marrison of Kiln (Ghostly International).
The 'Reforestation EP’ works as a solid accompaniment to the proper album, but also manages to stand on its own as a complete body of music. The warm ambiance of Mute Forest’s original songs set the perfect backdrop to be reshaped into something equally as intimate and memorable.
‘Settlers’ is the upcoming album from Western Skies Motel, out April 22nd, 2016 in a gatefold 180gram vinyl ( limited to 170 copies), cd and digital formats. 'Settlers’ was mastered for vinyl and digital by Taylor Deupree, lacquer cut by Roger Siebel at SAE, and physicals come with a bonus EP, 'Generations’ mastered by Kirk Marrison of Kiln.
In the dry desert of Arizona that Lost Tribe Sound calls home, a letter is received from guitarist René Gonzàlez Schelbeck who’s eager to share a collection of intimately composed songs, titled Settlers. Upon listening, we are immediately enthralled. There’s a timeworn, arid, and almost badlands quality to Schelbeck’s hypnotic, cyclical guitar style. It seems to perfectly capture the lonely, barren landscape of the American West.
Yet, there are curious dynamics at play here as Schelbeck, who makes music under the alias Western Skies Motel, is from Denmark and far removed from any upbringing in the rough-hewn Americana style of folk guitar. Conceivably, his music has more in common with the lonesome, calculated tone of Berlin’s modern classical scene or the rainy day folk of the UK. Those are intriguing parallels, since the collective mood of Western Skies Motel’s music would adapt so well to either environment.

Music for Film Volume I features select works of composer/multi-instrumentalist William Ryan Fritch’s own fiercely self-sufficient, acoustic, and rustic brand of modern classical music from soundtracks, commissions, and multi-media works composed in 2014. Whether it be the humid thicket of cellos for “Skunk” (from the Cannes award winning short film “Skunk”) or the piercing drama and sincerity of “Processional” ( a piece Fritch wrote for his own wedding), this collection seamlessly integrates sounds culled from widely varied visual worlds into an immersive and hypnotic narrative of it’s own. There is a good chance you have heard his work before in a film, a television show, a commercial, or in a number of GoPro videos but with Settled Scores’ ongoing series you can hear the best of Fritch’s film music presented as satisfying and cohesive stand alone records.
Settled Scores is a small boutique licensing company, founded by composer William Ryan Fritch and visual artist/record label owner Ryan Keane (LTS), that specializes in artful, organic, and painstakingly crafted music. Award winning filmmaker/editor Fiona Otway’s feature film The Sum Of Its Parts introduces some of the world’s foremost robot researchers alongside tomorrow’s future leaders in robotics. This film explores the messy front lines of the crusade to make robots part of our everyday experience. From initial sketches, to soldering wires, to programming actions and performing experiments “in the wild”, scientists, high school students, and artists obsessed with bringing robots to life are shaping a new era in our relationship with technology. Yet, by observing their successes and failures along the way, what becomes clear is that robots actually have a lot to teach us about what it means to be human. The Sum of Its Parts is a celebration of hands-on human creativity, and a contemplation of our deep need for connection and community as a source of meaning in our lives.

Empty, the latest EP from composer William Ryan Fritch, was released this week. It is an album of deceptively simple songs that, with their raw and unrestrained conveyance, emanate persuasive warmth and candor. The stripped down and restrained arrangements of these tracks are brought into extreme focus, saturating each note, thud, and pause with an expansive depth of field. These intimate songs proudly show their bruises. They offer stability in their numerous creaks and rasps, find clarity in common disillusionment, and celebrate loving and morbid tangents in the same breath. The beautiful cover art was provided by renowned Brazilian artist and illustrator João Ruas.

“Sometimes the Sun Doesn’t Want to Be Photographed” by Graveyard Tapes // White Rooms (Available Now via Lost Tribe Sound)
Here’s a wonderful case of accidental discovery. Graveyard Tapes are a duo hailing from Scotland that explore the darker sides of experimental pop. I happened upon their newest album, White Rooms, recently through Soundcloud, and was taken with their sound. In particular, their ghostly, minimalist track, “Sometimes the Sun Doesn’t Want to be Photographed” which is a pretty excellent representative for the kind of darkly alluring sounds that you’ll find on the full length. Throughout the haunting beauty, the duo play with tempo which is at once disorienting, but moreso hypnotic - which pulls you in further into the shadowy world that Graveyard Tapes build on each track. The duo’s experimental pop sound is confident, assured and at no time does it feel excessive - everything seems to be exactly in the place that it’s supposed to be, and that sort of confidence that makes the music so rewarding. It’s highly recommended for fans of Amnesiac-era Radiohead, Atlas Sound, and Neon Golden-era The Notwist.

'Empty’, the latest EP from composer William Ryan Fritch, is an album of deceptively simple songs that, with their raw and unrestrained conveyance, emanate persuasive warmth and candor. The stripped down and restrained arrangements of these tracks are brought into extreme focus, saturating each note, thud, and pause with an expansive depth of field. These intimate songs proudly show their bruises. They offer stability in their numerous creaks and rasps, find clarity in common disillusionment, and celebrate loving and morbid tangents in the same breath.
This EP, which will be released digitally November 11th, is the most recent installment in Lost Tribe Sound’s expansive subscription series of Fritch’s music; an endeavor that will see 10 albums (6 ½ hours of new music ) released in a span of less than nine months. In addition to this ambitious spate of records, his celebrated collaborative project with drummer Jon Mueller (Volcano Choir), Death Blues 'Ensemble’ was released on September 23rd.
'Empty’ will be available for purchase as a digital EP November 11th. It will also be included as a bonus download card to those who purchase the Deluxe LP Book of 'Revisionist’, the epic final installment of William Ryan Fritch’s Subscription Series coming in early 2015.
